Fanie van der Merwe, Principal – Gauteng
Fanie van der Merwe’s multi-faceted career spans 30 years across various industries, including commerce and industry, manufacturing, retail and mining.
After qualifying as a CA in 1993, Fanie supplemented his studies further with a Masters Degree in Financial Management, which he completed in 1994.
During this time, he honed his skills as an auditor, working as audit manager at Ernst & Young; however, he decided to shift focus by moving into commerce and industry, first with a stint at the then ISCOR Vanderbijlpark Works and then as Manager: Cost & Management Accounts at Crown Cork.
From here, Fanie’s career took a turn towards retail, when he joined the listed Profurn LTD group as financial controller for Morkels. He recorded many career highlights while part of this company; first moving Morkels’ financial and administrative office from Cape Town to Vereeniging in a record two months and then, once Profurn had been taken over by the JD Group, playing a key role in the migration of ERP systems from Oracle to Ability, and then to an inhouse system. Fanie left the JD Group after being headhunted to fill the Chief Financial Officer position at Vereeniging Refractories, where business consisted mainly of manufacturing and opencast mining. One of his standout achievements here saw him making a presentation to the National Energy Regulator of South Africa to dispute a unilateral gas price increase imposed on the company by Sasol Gas, which resulted in the latter agreeing to phase in the price increase over three years. During his tenure at Vereeniging Refractories, Fanie also gained extensive experience in investment policy setting and evaluation as principal officer and a trustee of the company pension and provident fund. Fanie then joined the Dickinson Group as CFO, again after being headhunted. Here, he gained experience in setting up a foreign company structure with Africa interests outside of South Africa.
Fanie decided to pursue his entrepreneurial interests in 2019, setting up SR Business and Financial Consulting as a vehicle to help small business owners develop their full potential. He is, additionally, an experienced Business Rescue practitioner, highly skilled in assisting distressed management and implementing turnaround strategies.
Married with three daughters, Fanie is an avid traveler, outdoor enthusiast and animal lover. He is a deacon at his local church.
