Gary Ballard, Principal – Gauteng
Holding a B.Com from Wits University and a B.Compt Hons from Unisa, Gary Ballard is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (FMCA).
Gary honed his skills first as an audit senior at Fisher Hoffman Stride (now PKF South Africa) before moving on to become a branch Financial Manager at Medscheme. In 1995 he was appointed Treasurer of EDS Africa (now HP South Africa).
This was followed by a stint as the General Manager: IT at Delta Corporation Ltd (listed AB InBev associate company). His time at the company led to the implementation of various IT technologies, which resulted in annual cost savings of US$240 000. In 2007 he joined Mjenzi Construction as Chief Financial Officer, where he was responsible for the financial, HR and administrative functions. He was, furthermore, in charge of the presentation of financial reports, formulated company strategy managed risk profile and outsource partners, and formulated the company’s BBBEE strategy. Other areas of responsibility included reviewing tender and progress valuations and claims submissions, and project managing various construction projects. During his time at Mjenzi, Gary developed strategies which enabled the company to grow its annual turnover from R40 million to R100 million.
Through these roles, Gary has developed a deep understanding of the issues facing SME owners.
His key skills include managerial finance, business strategy, budgets, financial analysis, forecasting, strategy, risk management, cash flow management, problem-solving, decision-making and people management.
Gary is a past executive committee member of the Master Builders Association North (Gauteng), and a past Chairman of the Computer Suppliers Association of Zimbabwe.
An avid family man with two university-age children, he enjoys birding and walking and supports Lions Rugby.
