Jan Lotter, Principal – Pretoria
Jan is a qualified Chartered Accountant with 20 years’ experience in the financial services industry. During his tenure with the MMI group, he obtained extensive exposure to the retail life insurance and investment industry. He also had exposure to banking and loyalty programs. Jan is also a member of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants.
As the divisional CFO with an innovative and dynamic insurance company he gained a thorough grounding and exposure to: strategic financial analysis, risk management, budgeting, forecasting, reporting and cash flow management. The MMI group over the years grew exponentially through mergers as well as organically through innovative new products; and this growth made him realise the importance of finances’ role in achieving and setting of strategic goals such as innovation, system integrations and cost efficiencies. During his time with the group and as a result of its exponential growth he gained exceptional experience on change management related issues that emerge within a dynamically changing business. He has extensive experience not only on the operational side of the business but also on the strategic side.
During his 20 years with the MMI group Jan gained a deep understanding of the value drivers of life insurance companies, as well as a clear understanding of the complex accounting regime that underpins insurance accounting. Jan also gained extensive experience in the risk management practices of insurance companies. Jan’s exposure to the MMI executive team meant he developed a deep understanding of the strategic cycle of organisations from developing a strategy to developing operational plans and associated budgets/forecasts that will ensure the strategy is executed as well as communicating clearly the organisations performance in delivering on the strategy.
During his time with MMI, Jan was involved with multiple life company mergers which required migration of the target companies life businesses onto the MMI platform. Jan and his finance team were also involved with setting the financial requirements for new products so as to ensure that new products were properly accounted for.
Jan believes that the finance function has an intricate knowledge and understanding of the enterprises desired strategic outcomes, and how they link to the businesses underlying operations, this enables him to facilitate implementation of the strategy in a meaningful way. He operates with a ‘hands-on’ approach as he believes that by engaging with the management team and staff directly it results in higher success rates with regards to achieving strategic outcomes.
Jan is married with two children. He is passionate about field hockey and played at provincial level.
